Dem Govs give $150K to fight SB5

The Democratic Governors Association is donating $150,000 to We Are Ohio to help the labor coalition in its attempt to defeat Issue 2.

The donation was announced by DGA executive director Colm O'Comartun in a letter to the AFL-CIO and Change to Win Unions obtained by The Dispatch. The Huffington Post first reported the donation.

"We recognize that the repeal of SB 5 in Ohio is ground zero in the fight to protect the rights of workers," O'Camartun wrote. "Republican Governor John Kasich and his allies in Mitt Romney and Rick Perry may have waged war against organized labor, but rest assured that we stand firmly with you in this fight.

"That is why the DGA is sending a contribution of $150,000 to “We Are Ohio” today. While we don’t often get involved in campaigns that are not directly related to gubernatorial elections, the stakes in Ohio are too high for us to sit on the sidelines. It is a fight that we must win to safeguard workers’ rights and to stand up to overreaching Republican governors like John Kasich."

The campaign finance report filing deadline is today, and it was unclear if the DGA's donation would appear on that report. The Republican Governors Association has helped Building a Better Ohio attempt to defend Issue 2 by airing generic ads featuring Kasich. The RGA also spent millions to help Kasich beat Ted Strickland last year.
