Obama's Ohio "truth team" debuts
The Columbus Dispatch - February 13, 2012 12:02 PM
The Obama campaign today announced a nationwide effort to push back against what they say are mischaracterizations of President Barack Obama's record by Republicans.
A few members of the Ohio truth team held a press conference this morning at Ohio Democratic Party headquarters launching the Buckeye state's operation. During that conference, Sharen Neuhardt, a candidate for Congress in Ohio's 10th District, said Obama supporters would use GOP presidential candidates' events to "call the Republicans out on their lies."
Asked if she meant Obama supporters would infiltrate Republican events and challenge statements made during speeches, Neuhardt said she was referring to events where "Republicans and Democrats both" would be at that are "open to the public."
"We'll do it in an appropriate, mindful way, recognizing the importance of the conversation," said Ohio Democratic chairman Chris Redfern, also a truth team member. "The truth team, we envision, will be more of a rapid response, taking a message directly at locations where those individuals who align with super PACs or organizations in support" of GOP presidential hopefuls are present.
Both Mitt Romeny and Rick Santorum will be in Ohio this week, with Santorum scheduled to speak in Columbus on Saturday.
Chris Maloney, a spokesman for the Ohio Republican Party, said: "The irony of this approach is not lost on Ohio voters because they recognize it’s Barack Obama who is seeking to obscure the truth about his failed record."
"The president understands that his reelection is contingent upon avoiding his failed record which has led to more debt, fewer jobs and higher taxes on the American people,” Maloney said.
The Obama campaign has also created a web-site (www.barackobama.com/truthteam) in support of its truth team message, similar to the web-site created during Obama's 2008 campaign. Other Democrats at the Ohio truth team press conference today were Columbus city Councilman Zach Klein and Mahoning County Democratic chair David Betras.
Later today, the Obama campaign is expected to open its Columbus field office at 1973 Dublin Granville Road.
Ohio GOP officials said they would respond later today.
