What happened: Voters yesterday turned down a third attempt by the Career and Technology Education Centers of Licking County to pass a 1-mill additional property tax to help save vocational-school and adult-education programs. The permanent levy would have raised $3.7 million a year to prevent the loss of teachers and programs. Final, unofficial results had a 54 percent no vote.

What happened: Voters yesterday turned down a third attempt by the Career and
Technology Education Centers of Licking County to pass a 1-mill additional property tax to help
save vocational-school and adult-education programs. The permanent levy would have raised $3.7
million a year to prevent the loss of teachers and programs. Final, unofficial results had a 54
percent no vote.
What now: Superintendent Ron Cassidy said the vocational school will try again in the spring but probably will have to cut $2 million from the budget. The vocational school has been run on a 2-mill operating levy since 1976, and leaders say revenue drops mean the school can no longer maintain its quality of services without new revenue. A comment: "It's a big disappointment," Superintendent Ron Cassidy said. "We have such a good program, I hate to have to make such cuts." Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
