The Reynoldsburg City Council on Monday will begin considering an ordinance that would increase the city's bed tax from 4 percent to 6 percent. City auditor Richard Harris said the increase could generate an additional $80,000 per year. The Reynoldsburg Visitors and Community Activities Bureau receives 60 percent of the bed tax, with a cap of $75,000 per year. The city collects the remaining 40 percent. Harris said that Reynoldsburg received $87,317 in 2008 after the visitors bureau got its maximum $75,000. He said the increased rate would bring Reynoldsburg in line with many other central Ohio communities. Dublin, Gahanna, Grandview Heights, Grove City, Hilliard, Upper Arlington, Westerville, Whitehall, Worthington and Canal Winchester all charge a 6 percent bed tax. The rate in Columbus is 5.1 percent. A bed tax can be collected only from hotels within a city, and only if a convention or visitors bureau has been established and registered in the community.
